The average1040 website was down when we try to access it during pre filing season and looks like they go live only for the tax season. Other websites keep their web presence even though it may block login or access the tax return preparation software. We were able to access the site Mid Jan and did a review of their 2008 tax software. You need to request a new password every year from average1040 and they don't keep your carry forward your details from previous years. Even after entering your personal information, it is not carried forward to other tax forms. This software looks like a tax organizer or a tax calculator than professional tax software. Otherwise also their federal return fee $6.99 (add $1.63 service charge) is very low.
average1040 supports only returns for single, Joint and Head of Household filing status and you are out of luck if your filing status is either Qualified widower or Married Filing Separate.
You can use average1040 to prepare and e-file resident tax returns for the Arizona, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio or Pennsylvania states.
They are partnered with IRS Free file alliance and you get free federal online tax preparation and e-file if your adjusted gross income is $54,000 or less and you live in AL, AR, AZ, GA, IA, ID, IL, KY, MA, MI, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, ND, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, RI, VT or WV.
