A common requirements among most of the tax software vendor for free tax return file is the $54,000 or less limit on the adjusted gross income. Some vendors like TaxAct has age limitations as well. The adjusted gross income is the income after adjusting your gross income for some tax credits and tax deductions and is usually lower than your gross income.
