IRS requires every individual and business need a tax id number to identify them self and pay taxes. The individuals use their SS number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number(ITIN) as tax id number. Business use employers id number (EIN), if they have any employees working for them.

Social Security Number

Every us citizen and all eligible residents get a social security number from the social security administration. IRS uses it as the tax id number for individuals. If you are eligible and don't have one, you need to apply for one at a local SSA office.

ITIN

If you are a non resident alien or an individual who is not eligible for social security number, but required to file united state tax return, then you can apply for itin number along with your tax return. Normally ITIN is required for the following types of individuals :

Non-resident alien filing a U.S. tax return and not eligible for an SSN
U.S. resident alien (based on days present in the United States) filing a U.S. tax return and not eligible for an SSN
Dependent or spouse of a U.S. citizen/resident alien
Dependent or spouse of a non-resident alien visa holder
ITIN is issued by IRS and is used only for the tax purposes.

Employer ID Numbers (EINs)

Employer ID Numbers is required for all business entities that have one or more employees. Other entities like a corporation or a partnership, a trust etc need an Employer ID Numbers.
